Amostra: um recorte da coleção Luisa Strina
"Tenho a intenção de dar uma ideia sobre o relacionamento de um colecionador com seus pertences, uma ideia sobre a arte de colecionar mais do que sobre a coleção em si. É inteiramente arbitrário que eu faça isso baseando-me na observação das diversas maneiras de adquirir livros. Este processo ou qualquer outro é apenas um dique contra a maré de água viva de recordações que chega rolando na direção de todo colecionador ocupado com o que é seu. De fato, toda paixão confina com um caos, mas a de colecionar com o das lembranças. Contudo, direi mais ainda: o acaso e o destino que tingem o passado diante de meus olhos se evidenciam simultaneamente na desordem habitual desses livros. Pois o que é a posse se não uma desordem na qual o hábito se acomodou de tal modo que ela só pode aparecer como se fosse ordem? Vocês já ouviram falar de pessoas que adoeceram com a perda de seus livros, de outras que neste ofício se tornaram criminosas. Nesse domínio, toda ordem é precisamente uma situação oscilante à beira do precipício. “O único conhecimento exato que existe”—disse Anatole France—“é o do ano de publicação e o do formato dos livros”. Na prática, se há uma contrapartida da desordem de uma biblioteca, seria a ordenação de seu catálogo.
Assim, a existência do colecionador é uma tensão dialética entre os pólos da ordem e da desordem.
Naturalmente, sua existência está sujeita a muitas outras coisas: há uma relação muito misteriosa com a propriedade, sobre a qual algumas palavras ainda devem ser ditas mais tarde; a seguir: há uma relação com as coisas que não põe em destaque o seu valor funcional ou utilitário, a sua serventia, mas que as estuda e as ama como palco, como cenário de seu destino. O maior fascínio do colecionador é encerrar cada peça num círculo mágico onde ela se fixa quando passa por ela a última excitação—a excitação da compra. Tudo o que é lembrado, pensado, conscientizado, torna-se alicerce, moldura, pedestal, fecho de seus pertences. A época, a região, a arte, o dono anterior—para o verdadeiro colecionador todos esses detalhes se somam para formar uma enciclopédia mágica, cuja quintessência é o destino de seu objeto. Aqui, portanto, neste campo restrito, pode-se presumir como os grandes fisiognomonistas—e os colecionadores são os fisiognomonistas do mundo dos objetos—se tornam intérpretes do destino. Basta observar um colecionador manuseando os objetos em seu mostruário de vidro. Mal segura em suas mãos, parece inspirado a olhar através deles para os seus passados remotos."
