_The solo exhibition “Retratos Relatos: Subvertendo a Dor” [Portrait Stories: Subverting Pain], by Panmela Castro, is on view at Sesc Centro in Curitiba, Brazil.
The project began in 2019, with messages and testimonies the artist received from dozens of women across Brazil: accounts of violence, but also stories of overcoming adversity. The works included in the show were painted in 2023 during an artist residency at Sesc Santa Rita, in Paraty. The exhibition portrays ten women from different regions of Brazil and seeks to tell, through paintings alongside stories of resilience, how each protagonist faced sexism and violence. The exhibition is curated by Maybel Sulamita.
